Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (NoVa RSCDS) In 1923, the Scottish Country Dance Society (SCDS, later 'Royal' Scottish Country Dance Society or RSCDS) was founded in order to preserve traditional Scottish country dancing (SCD). It is a modern form of the "country dancing" popular in England and Scotland in the 18th century. Involving a group of 6 to 10 people dancing to one of three tempos, the dance often combines solo's with movements for all the dancers. There are over 7000 different dances catalogued, many of which were dances derived from traditional sources such as old manuscripts and printed dance collections. This fusion of the traditional and the modern as well as its ongoing evolution are part of the attraction of Scottish country dancing. Today's Scottish Country Dances continue the tradition of social gatherings for the whole community. We have members all around the world ready to welcome you to their classes and events. Whoever you are, wherever you are, you are welcome to join in. You don't need a partner, you don't need to be Scottish, and beginners are always welcome!
